UPSC IAS 2016: Union Public Service Commission conducts the recruitment examination for recruiting top candidates into the prestigious Indian Administrative Service. It is regarded as one of the most competitive Civil Services Examination (CSE) as there are multiple stages for screening candidates (Pre & Mains Written Exam), a next to impossible interview to crack and the process takes almost an entire year. Hence, only the best of the best make it through the final cut.
The first stage of IAS Examination is a Preliminary Objective Paper which is usually conducted around August, while the second stage, IAS Mains Written Exam, is conducted around December. Candidates who are able to crack Mains Examination face the final round, i.e. the Interview/ Personality Test during April-May. The final result is usually out by the month of June.

UPSC IAS Eligibility Criteria 2016
There a few metric or criteria according to which a candidate is deemed eligible/ not eligible for IAS Examination. The various IAS eligibility metrics are as follows.

Let us discuss each eligibility criteria set for Civil Services Examination i.e. IAS 2016.
Nationality
A candidate, in whose case a certificate of eligibility is necessary, may be admitted to the examination but the offer of appointment may be given only after the necessary eligibility certificate has been issued to him by the Government of India.
- For the Indian Administrative Service and the Indian Police Service, a candidate must be a citizen of India.
- For other services, a candidate must be either:
- a citizen of India, or
- a subject of Nepal, or
- a subject of Bhutan, or
- a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before 1st January, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India. Or
- a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Srilanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.
Educational Qualification
In order to satisfy IAS Eligibility Criteria in terms of educational qualification, a candidate must possess a degree from any of the Universities incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be a Deemed University under the UGC Act, 1956, or an equivalent qualification.
Number of Attempts & Age Limit
For IAS Eligibility, there is certain age limit set according to the category of the candidate. Corresponding to both age and category, there is also a set number for the total number of attempts a candidate can appear for IAS Exam. Let us have a look at it.

- For General Category candidates, the age limit is 32 years and the number of attempts is 6.
- For OBC Category candidates, the age limit is 35 years and the number of attempts is 9.
- For SC/ST Category candidates, the age limit is 37 years while the number of attempts unlimited.
- For Physically Handicapped (P.H.) candidates, age limit is 42, 45 and 47 years for General, OBC and SC/ST category respectively while the number of attempts is 09 for General and OBC and unlimited for SC/ST category.
Certain categories of persons as specified in the Commission’s Notice as published in Employment News/ Rozgar Samachar are eligible for age relaxation.
