ATP Dubai Open 2016
  • Stan Wawrinka (Switzerland) has won the 2016 Dubai ATP Tennis title in the men’s singles category by defeating Marcos Baghdatis in the final played on February 27, 2016.
  • It was his second ATP World Tour title of the year, following his third straight Chennai title in January, and B sixth straight victory over 30-year-old Baghdatis. He has won his past nine finals.
  • Sara Errani (Italy) has won the 2016 Dubai ATP Tennis tfcte in the women’s singles category by defeating Barbora Suyoova of Czech Republic.
  • Italian pair of Simone Bolelli and Andreas Seppi has won the title in the men’s doubles category by defeating the Spanish pair Feliciano Lopez and Marc Lopez.
  • The pair of Chuang Chia-jung (Chinese Taipei) and Danya Jurak (Croatia) won the tide in the women’s doubles category by defeating the French pair of Caroline Garda and Kristina Mladenovic.
Petersburg Ladies Trophy 2016
  • Santa Mirza the Indian tennis star and Martina Hingis from Swiss won the Sc Petersburg Ladies Trophy on February 15, 2016 in St. Petersburg, Russia.
  • The top-seeded indo-Swiss pair conquered the Russian-Czech team of Vera Dushevina and Barbora Krejdkova in the women’s doubles final.
  • The victory la the final was ensuing 40 match win. Sania and Hingis won the fourth title in 2016. They also won the women’s doubles Australian Open, Apia International Sydney tide and Brisbane Tennis trophy in 2016.
Australian Open 2016
  • Novak Djokovic won 2016 Australian Open men’s singles title of tennis by defeating Andy Murray of Britain in the final played on January 31, 2016.
  • Angehque Kerber (Germany) won the women’s singles tide by defeating defending champion Serena Williams in the final on January’ 30,2016. With this Kerber became the first German to win a major title since Steffi Graf in 1999.
  • Sania Mirza (India) and Martina Hingis (Switzerland) won the women’s doubles tide by defeating Czech duo of Andrea Hlavackov a and Luck Hradecka on January 29,2016.
  • The pair of Jamie Murray (UK) and Bruno Soares (Brazil) west men’s doubles title by defeating the pair of Darfid Nestor and Radek Stcpanek from Czech Republic.
  • The pair of Elena Vesnina (Russia) and Bruno Soares (Brazil) has won the tide in the mixed doubles category by defeating the pair of Coco Vandeweghe (USA) and Horia Tecau (Romania).
Cricket Current Affairs
Ranji Trophy 2015-16
  • Mumbai won the Ranji Trophy for a record 41st time with a comprehensive innings and 21-run victory over Saurashtra on day three of the five-day final in Pune on February 26, 2016.
  • It was a repeal of the 2012-13 final where Mumbai had made short work of Saurashtra with an innings and 125-run triumph.
  • Shreyas Iyer was deservingly named man of the match for his 117 in Mumbai’s only innings of the match.
  • He ended the season as the leading run-getter with 1321 runs at 73.38 including four centuries and seven fifties.
  • Mumbai Ranji Trophy champions have 41 titles to their name in 45 finals with 10 of them being an innings victory. Karnataka are a distant second in the overall Ranji standings with eight titles.

Men’s T20 World Cup 2016
  • West Indies emerged as champions of Men’s ICC T-20 World -Cup 2016 against England at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on April 3, 2016. Led by Marlon Samuels’ unbeaten 85, West Indies chased down the target of 156 runs with two balls to spare.
  • In the final match, England batting first had scored 155 runs for 9 wickets. West Indies successfully chased the target by scoring 161 runs in 19.4 over at the loss of 4 wickets. With this victory, West Indies became the only team who clinched their 2nd World T20 title. Earlier, it had won its first title in 2012 by defeating Sri Lanka.
  • The 2016 ICC World Twenty20 was the 6th edition of the ICC World Twenty20, the world championship of Twenty20 International cricket. It was held in India from March 8 to April 3, 2016, and was the first edition to be hosted by India.
Women’s T-20 World Cup 2016
  • West Indies has won their maiden Women’s World T-20 title by defeating reigning champions Australia by 8 wickets at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on March 3, 2016.
  • First Australia took the batting and had score 148 runs for 5 wickets. West Indies successfully chessed the target by scoring 149 runs in 19.3 over at the loss of 2 wickets. A world record 120-run opening partnership between Matthews and Taylor set-up the chase.
  • Captain Stafanie Taylor of West Indies awarded the Player of the series award and Hayley Matthews of West Indies, an younger teammate awarded the Player of the match Award.
Irani Cup 2015-16
  • Rest of India have continued their dominance in the Irani Trophy and they won 2015-16 title by defeating Mumbai in the final played at Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on March 10, 2016.
  • Rest of India overhauled the record victory target of 480 by making 482 for 6 on the fifthrand final day. They sealed the victory by four wickets.
  • Since 2006-07, Karnataka was the only State that managed to win the trophy twice i.e., in 2013-14 and 2014-15. But since 2006, the remaining campaigns have been dominated by Rest of India.
Asia Cup 2016
  • India won by eight wickets in the final of the Asia Cup at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on March 6, 2016 by defeating host Bangladesh. This is the first time the Asia Cup was held in T20 format.
  • Indian team overhauled the chasing target of 121 runs set by Bangladesh by seven balls to spare. With this victory, India lifted its sixth Asia Cup title. After India, Sri Lanka has won the continental title 5 times and then by Pakistan for twice.
  • The 13th edition continental Asia Cup title was held in Bangladesh from February 24 to March 6, 2016. It was the fifth time to be held in Bangladesh. In this edition of Asia Cup T20 trophy 4 teams had participated including India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, UAE (Qualifier).

TENNIS
Wimbledon 2016
• Andy Murray (United Kingdom) won men’s singles title on July 10, 2016 after defeating Milos Raonic (Canada). Murray is the first British man to win multiple Wimbledon singles titles since Fred Perry in 1935.
• Serena Williams won women’s singles title and made world record of 22 grand slams after winning.
• Men’s doubles title was won by Pierre-Hugeus Herbert and Nicolas Mahut. Women’s doubles title won by Serena Williams and Venus Williams.
FOOTBALL
UEFA Euro 2016
• Euro 2016, was the 15th UEFA European Championship, the quadrennial international men’s football championship of Europe organised by UEFA.
• Portugal won the tournament for the first time, following a 1-0 victory after extra time over the host team, France, in the final held in France from June 10 to July 10, 2016.
• For the first time, the European Championship final tournament was contested by 24 teams, having been expanded from the 16-team.

Hungarian Grand Prix 2016
• Lewis Hamilton made a comfortable victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix to take the championship lead for the first time this season on July 24, 2016.
• Lewis Carl Davidson Hamilton is a British Formula One racing driver from England, currently racing for the Mercedes AMG Petronas team. He is the 2008, 2014 and 2015 Formula One World Champion.
• The Hungarian Grand Prix is a motor race held annually in Hungary. Since 1986, the race has been a round of the FIA Formula One World Championship.
British Grand Prix 2016
• Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton won the British Grand Prix on July 10, 2016.
• This was his fourth win of the season and the 47th of his career as he equalled Nigel Mansell’s British GP record of four wins.
• He is a British Formula One racing driver from England, currently racing for the Mercedes AMG Petronas team. He is the 2008, 2014 and 2015 Formula One World Champion.
BADMINTON
Canada Open Grand Prix 2016
• B. Sal Praneeth and Rio-bound men’s doubles pair of Manu Attri and B. Sumecth Reddy clinched twin crowns after winning their respective title clash at Grand Prix badminton tournament on July 4, 2016.
• Praneeth defeated Korea’s Lee Hyun in the men’s singles final. Manu and Sumeeth Reddy, who became the first Indian men’s doubles pair to qualify for the Rio Olympics, received a big boost when they defeated local combo of Adrian Liu and Toby Ng.
• Manu and Sumeeth justified their top billing by making light work of local pair Adrian Liu and Toby Ng in a one-sided final. The Indians needed just 25 minutes to notch-up a crushing victory to lift their first Canada Open title.
SQUASH
73rd Senior National Championship 2016
• Dipika Pallikal Karthik dethroned defending champion Joshna Chinappa to won the women’s title in the 73rd Senior National Squash Championship in Mumbai on July 17, 2016.
• The men’s crown was captured by Saurav Ghosal, who created history by winning it for the 11th time, defeating fourth seed Harinderpal Singh Sandhu.
• The Squash Rackets Federation of India (SRFI) is the Indian governmental apex body for the game of squash. It conducts the National Squash Championship, and promotes the game through the different State-level squash bodies, and provides training facilities and selects the squad for the Indian team.

Queen’s Club Title 2016
  • Britain’s Andy Murray won a record fifth Queen’s Club title with a victory over Canada’s Milos Raonic on June 21, 2016.
  • He became the first player to win this historic event five times. At the 2012 US Open, Murray became the first British player since 1977, and the first British man since 1936, to win a Grand Slam singles tournament.
  • Murray has been the runner-up in eight other singles Grand Slam finals : the 2008 US Open, the 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2016 Australian Opens, the 2012 Wimbledon Championships.
French Open 2016
  • World number one Novak Djokovic defeated Britain’s Andy Murray to win his first French Open title on June 5, 2016.
  • In the men’s doubles the Lopezs took the title beating the Bryans. Carolina Garcia and Kiki Mladenovic (a French team) won the women’s doubles beating consistent bridesmaids Elena Vesnina and Ekatarina Makarova.
  • Martina Hingis and Leander Paes won the mixed doubles, beating I Sania Mirza and Ivan Dodig.
Hockey
Women’s Champions Trophy 2016
  • Argentina women’s team has claimed a record seventh Champions Trophy title with a 2-1 win over reigning World and Olympic champions, the Netherlands, in the final at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre on June 30, 2016.
  • First quarter goals from Martina Cavallero and Noel borruneao gave Las Leonas a 2-0 lead to stun the top-ranked Dutch, who were missing team captain and talisman Maartje Paumen through injury.
  • Argentina held on to win their third successive Champions Trophy title.
Men’s Champions Trophy 2016
  • Men’s hockey team of India bagged a silver medal in the Champions Trophy for the first time in history on June 19, 2016.
  • The Indian team settled for a silver medal in its best ever performance in the prestigious tournament after going down fighting 1-3 to world champions Australia in a controversy-marred summit clash penalty shootout.
  • The apex body for hockey in India announced a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh each for the players and Head Coach Roelant Oltmans and a cash prize of Rs 1 lkh for all other coaches and support staff on the account of brilliant performance finish in the tournament and winning a silver medal.

Indian Premier League 2016
  • Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by 8 runs to clinch their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title in a high-octane summit clash at the Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru on May 29, 2016. It was the ninth edition of IPL.
  • SRH scored 208 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs. Ben Cutting of Hyderabad was declared the Man of the Match for his all round performance. He had scored 39 runs and claimed two wickets.
  • This was the maiden Indian Premier League title for Sunrisers Hyderabad, while third final lost for RCB in the IPL. Earlier, it lost in finals of 2009 and 2011 editions.
Tennis
Italian Open 2016
  • Andy Murray (Britain) has won the Italian Open 2016 title of Tennis in the men’s singles category on May 15, 2016. It was Murray’s first Italian Open title. Andy Murray is second British male tennis player to win Italian Open title after George Patrick Hughes who had won it in 1931. The Italian Open is an annual tennis tournament held ip Rome, Italy. The championship was first held in 1930.
  • It is also known as the Rome Masters and the Italian Championships. Rafael Nadal has won the title a record seven times.
Madrid Open 2016
  • On May 9, 2016 tennis player Novak Djokovic (Serbia) won the Mutua Madrid Open 2016 title in men’s, singles category by defeating Andy Murray from Great Britain in the final match palyed in Madrid (Spain).
  • After this victory, Djokovic moves ahead of Spain’s Rafael Nadal with a record 29 ATP Masters 1000 titles. It was also Djokovic’s fifth win in the last 6 ATP 1000 competitions.
  • Netherlands Jean-Julien Rojer (Netherlands)/Horia Tecau (Romania) won in men’s doubles, Romania Simona Halep won in women’s singles and France Caroline Garcia/France Kristina Mladenovic won in women’s doubles.
Football
UEFA Champions League 2016
  • Real Madrid were crowned kings of European dub football for a record 11th time on May 29, 2016 by defeating dty rivals Atletico Madrid on penalties in the 2016 Champions League final, staged at Milan’s San Siro stadium.
  • It was Real’s second success in the competition in the past three seasons, with both finals being won against Atletico.
  • Cristiano Ronaldo scored the winning penalty in a 5-3 shootout victory against Atletico Madrid. Atletico earlier lost in their two previous finals appearances.
  • The UEFA Champions League is an annual continental club football competition organised by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and contested by top-division European clubs.
  • It is one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world and the most prestigious club competition in European football.
14th Federation Cup
  • Mohun Bagan FC won by a record 5-0 margin and regain the Federation Cup football title after eight years, at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in Guwahati on May 21, 2016.
  • The last time Bagan had won the title was in 2008, when it beat Dempo 1-0 at home. Recently, Mohun Bagan claimed their first ever I-League title (in addition to their previous 3 National Football League titles). Mohun Bagan became the first Indian club.
Formula One
Monaco Grand Prix 2016
  • Lewis Hamilton, a British Formula One racing driver, races for the Mercedes AMG Petronas team won the 2016 Monaco F1 Grand Prix on May 29, 2016.
  • He achieved this height in a close battle with Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo.
  • It is Hamilton’s first win this year cut his deficit to Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg, who finished seventh, to 24 points. In 2015, he became the first British driver in history to win consecutive FI titles.
  • The Formula One motor race was held at the Circuit de Monaco, a street circuit that runs through the Principality of Monaco. It was the sixth round of the 2016 season. It is the only Grand Prix that does not adhere to the FIA’s mandated 305 km minimum race distance.
Spanish Grand Prix 2016
  • Max Verstappen became the youngest winner of a Formula One race when he won in Spanish Grand Prix on May 15, 2016.
  • Verstappen made his FI debut for Toro Rosso as a 17-year-old last year.
  • He crossed the winning line aged 18 years and 228 days, beating Sebastian VetteTs previous record by two and a half years—Vettel was 21 and 73 days when he won in Italy in 2008.

Asian 6-Red Snooker Title
  • Pankaj Advani, won the Asian 6-Red snooker title in Abu Dhabi on May 23, 2016. Advani thus became the first in the world to hold both world and continental titles in 6-Red snooker at the same time.
  • The government of India bestowed several awards upon Advani—Arjuna Award (2004), Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna (2006) and Padma Shri (2009)

Barcelona Open 2016
  • Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal, won the 2016 Barcelona Open title of Tennis by defeating Kei Nishikori of Japan in the final match played in Barcelona (Spain) on April 24, 2016.
  • It was his overall 9th Barcelona Open title and 69th win from 101 finals on the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) World Tour.
  • With this victory, Nadal equalled Guillermo Vilas’ decade’s record of 49 clay-court titles. He has won 14 Grand Slam singles titles, 28 titles in ATP World Tour Masters 1000 events and 16 ATP World Tour 500 tournaments.
Monte Carlo Masters 2016
  • Spain Maestro Rafael Nadal won his ninth Monte Carlo Masters title by defeating Gael Monfils of France by in his 100th career title clash in France on April 18, 2016.
  • He won the title eight consecutive times between 2005 and 2012, creating him the only male player in the open era to win eight consecutive titles at the same tournament. In total, he has won 14 Grand Slam singles titles, 28 titles in ATP World Tour Masters 1000 events and 16 ATP World Tour 500 tournaments.

ISSF Junior World Cup
  • Indian shooters made a historical victory by winning 3 gold medals and a Bronze on the inaugural day of the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Junior World Cup on May 2, 2016.
  • A gold in the team events of men’s 25 m standard pistol won by Rituraj Singh, Shivam Shukla and Arjun Das.
  • A gold in team events of women’s 50 m rifle won by Gaayathri Nithyanadam, Sonika and Ayushi Poddar. A gold in men’s 25 m standard pistol by Rituraj Singh. A bronze in the women’s 50 m rifle prone competition by Gaayathri Nithyanadam.
ISSF World Cup
  • Indian shooter Mairaj Ahmed Khan won silver medal in the men’s skeet event at ISSF World Cup held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on April 25, 2016 while gold medal was won by Sweden’s Marcus Svensson and the bronze medal was won by Tamarro Casandro of Italy.
  • Earlier in the year, he became India’s first ever skeet shooter to win an Olympic seat after finishing at sixth place in last year’s ISSF Shotgun World Cup in Italy.
  • In the 2010, Commonwealth Shooting Championship he won a team gold medal which was his best international performance earlier. Indian shooter Jitu Rai ended with 6th spot in the men’s 50 m pistol event on April 20, 2016.
Badminton
Malaysian Open 2016
  • Lee Chong Wei (Malaysia) won the men’s singles title on April 10, 2016 at the Malaysia Open title of Badminton.
  • He defeated world number one Chen Long (China), beating him in a match that lasted 42 minutes.
  • The title is Chong Wei’s 11th Malaysia Open crown after having won in 2004, 2005, 2006 and consecutively from 2008-2014.

Formula One
Chinese Grand Prix 2016
  • Nico Rosberg Mercedes driver won in Chinese Grand Prix over Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton on April 17, 2016.
  • This was his 17th win and Rosberg became the fourth driver in the sport’s history to win six races in succession by joining Sebastian Vettel, Michael Schumacher and Alberto Ascari.
  • Chinese Grand Prix race was the 3rd race of the 2016 season of Formula One I in which total 11 teams had participated.

TENNIS Current Affairs
China Open 2016
  • Andy Murray won 2016 China Open men’s singles title by defeating Grigor Dimitrov on October 9, 2016. China Open is held annually. It is a tennis tournament which is played at Beijing.
  • While Agnieszka Radwanska won women’s singles title.
  • Murray became the first British player since 1977, and the first British man since 1936, to win a Grand Slam singles tournament, when he defeated Novak Djokovic in the final.
  • In July, 2013, Murray won the 2013 Wimbledon Championships, becoming the first British player to win a Wimbledon senior singles title since Virginia Wade in 1977, and the first British man to win the men’s singles title since Fred Perry, 77 years previously.
  • In 2016, he won his second Wimbledon title to become the first British man to win multiple Wimbledon singles titles since Perry in 1935.

India-New Zealand ODI Series 2016
  • India won the five-match ODI series against New Zealand, 3-2 on October 29, 2016. In the fifth match played at Visakhapatnam, India defeated New Zealand by 190 runs. In the final match, New Zealand was bowled out for 79 in 23.1 overs. It was New Zealand’s lowest ODI total against India.
  • ‘Player of the Series’ was Amit Mishra (India). Indian team’s jersey in the fifth and final ODI match was the most important. In a gesture of respect towards women, the Indian cricketers were wearing their mother’s names on the back of their jerseys.
India-New Zealand Test Series 2016
  • India registered another emphatic series victory by beating New Zealand in the third Test with an impressive margin of 3-0.
  • India won by 321 runs against New Zealand in third Test at Indore. This is the second biggest victory for India in Tests in terms of runs. India’s biggest win in Tests in terms of runs came against South Africa by 337 runs at Delhi in December, 2015.
  • This is also India’s biggest win in terms of runs against New Zealand. 4th time India whitewashed any team in a three-match Test series. Previous whitewashes by India in three-match series came over England in 1993 (3-0), Sri Lanka in 1994 (3-0) and Australia in 2013 (4-0).

US Open 2016
• Stanislas Wawrinka (Switzerland) won his third Grand Slam championship after winning the 2016 US Open by beating world number one Novak Djokovic (Serbia) in the finals on September 12, 2016.
• Earlier, he has reached three Grand Slam singles finals in his career,. winning all three, the 2014 Australian Open, the 2015 French Open and the 2016 US Open.
• In doubles and team tennis for Switzerland, he has won a gold medal in the men’s doubles event at the 2008 Summer Olympics, partnering with Roger Federer, and the Davis Cup in 2014.
• He played in the longest doubles match in history at the 2013 Davis Cup, in a tie against the Czech Republic.

Duleep Trophy 2016-17
• Gautam Gambhir-led India Blue won the inaugural day/night Duleep Trophy Cricket tournament held in Greater Noida on September 14, 2016.
• In the final, India Blue defeated India Red, captained by Yuvraj Singh, by a massive 355 runs. Cheteshwar Pujara was named the ‘Player of the Match’.
• The Duleep Trophy is a domestic first-class cricket competition played in India between teams representing geographical zones of India.
• The competition is named after Kumar Shri Duleepsinhji of Nawanagar. The 2016-17 Duleep Trophy was the 55th season of the Duleep Trophy.
F1 RACE
Italian Grand Prix 2016
• Germany’s Nico Rosberg won the Italian Grand Prix for dominant Mercedes to cut team mate Lewis Hamilton’s Formula One world championship lead to two points on September 4, 2016.
• Rosberg, earlier won the 2005 GP2 Series for the ART team, having raced in Formula 3 Euro Series previously for his father Keke Rosberg’s racing organisation. He has enjoyed his most successful period, winning 21 Grands Prix and’ earning 28 pole positions. .

BADMINTON
Brazil Open Grand Prix 2016
• Indian mixed doubles pair of Sikki Reddy and Pranaav Jerry Chopra clinched their maiden Grand Prix title, bagging the Brazil Open with a straight game victory over Canadian combo of Toby Ng and Rachel Honderich in the finals on September 5, 2016. .
• Sikki, whd has been a part of the bronze medal winning Indian team at the 2014 and 2016 Uber Cup. Sikki won both the women’s doubles and mixed doubles titles.
• Pranaav had started in Sutlej club in Ludhiana before moving to Mumbai where for two years he trained under Uday Pawar. In 2008, he joined Gopichand Badminton Academy and started competing on the international circuit.
SQUASH
U-19 Asian Junior Individual Championship
• India’s emerging player Velavan Senthilkumar after defeating Jordan’s . Mohammad Al-Sarraj won the U-19 Asian Junior Individual squash championship title on September 25, 2016.
• The Chennai lad, who .trains at the Indian Squash Academy (ISA), is the second Indian to win the title after Ravi Dixit in 2010.
• From among 31 Indian players in various age categories at the tournament, there were two more medal winners in Tushar Shahani, who claimed silver in boys ‘U-17, and Yash Fadte who earned a bronze in boys’ U-15 section.
ATHLETICS CURRENT AFFAIRS
Asian Beach Games 2016
• India opened their medal account in the 5 th Asian Beach Games with Pinky Balhara bagged a bronze in kurash on the opening day of competitions on September 25, 2016.
• She won the bronze in women’s 52 kg category after she lost to Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy of Vietnam in the semifinals.
• The athletes will participate in 13 disciplines which include Swimming, Kabaddi, Handball, Kurash, Pencak Silat, Sambo, Ju-Jitsu, Woodball, Sepaktakraw, Pentaque, Shuttlecock, Voninam and Muay Thai.
Rio Paralympics 2016
• Devendra Jhajharia, won gold medal in the javelin throw F46 event of the Rio 2016 Paralympics on September 13, 2016.
• Previously, he had wbn gold at the 2004 Athens Paralympics with a throw of 62.15 m with which he set a world record. In Rio de Janeiro, he bettered 97 m.
• He also won gold at the International Paralympic Committee’s (IPC) Athletics World Championships in Lyon in 2013.
• He last participated in the Paralympics 12 years ago. The F46 event did not feature in the 2008 and the 2012 editions.
• He broke the previous world record set by himself in the event. Jhajharia’s achievement is India’s second gold medal and fourth medal overall in the Rio Paralympics.
• Mariyappan Thangavelu won India’s first gold medal at Rio 2016 Paralympics on September 9, 2016.
• In March, 2016, Mariyappan cleared a distance of 1.78 m in the men’s high jump T42 event at the IPC Grand Prix in Tunisia, qualifying him for the Rio Paralympics. At the Rio Paralympics, he won the gold medal in the men’s high jump T42 finals, with a leap of 1.89 m.
TABLE TENNIS CURRENT AFFAIRS
Belgium Open 2016
• Sathiyan Gnanasekaran has become only the second Indian table tennis player to win an ITTF event as he clinched the men’s singles title of the Belgium Open.
• He won his first pro title by defeating local player Nuytinck Cedric in the final played at De Haan in Belgium.
• Achanta Sharath Kamal is the first Indian to win an ITTF event in 2012.
SHOOTING CURRENT AFFAIRS
World Deaf Championships
• Priyesha Deshmukh won bronze in the 10 m air rifle { category at the first World Deaf Shooting Championships held in Kazan on September 18, 2016.
• She scored 180.4 in the final to secure the third spot, a big achievement for someone who started the sport only three years ago.
• She had qualified for the medal round after scoring 404.9 in the qualification round. Ukraine’s Svitlana Yatsenko (201.6 in final) and Serbia’s Gordana Mikovic (200.3) won gold and silver respectively.
MARTIAL ARTS
World Masterships 2016
• Sushmita Rai East Sikkim grabbed a bronze at the recently concluded World Martial Arts Mastership 2016 which was held at Cheongju, Chungcheongbuk-do of South Korea on September 13, 2016.
• She had also won a Silver Medal at the Asian Kickboxing Championship 2015 held in Pune, Maharashtra.
• The competition was an Olympics for martial arts with 2073 participants from 87 countries. It was the first comprehensive martial arts competition where national teams from across the globe took part.
WUSHU
6th Asian Championship
• The Indian wushu team won four silver and five bronze medals in the 6th Asian Championship which drew to a close in Taoyuan (Taiwan) on September 6, 2016.
• Silver medals winners were L. Budha Chandra Singh (56 kg), Praveen Kumar (48 kg), Rajinder Singh (90 kg), K. Arunpama Devi (60 kg).
• Bronze medals winners were Y. Santhoi Devi (52 kg), Pooja Kadian (65 kg), Vishakha Malik (70 kg), Rajani Deori (75 kg).
SPORTS PERSONALITIES
Kieren Dsouza
• In a run that lasted, 33 hr, 3 min and 25 sec, Kieren Dsouza became the first ever Indian to finish it on October 3, 2016.
• The Spartathlon, an annual run between Athens in Sparta in Greece has a circuit which lasts for 246.6 km and is widely considered, ‘The world’s toughest race.
• He had been training for this race since 2012 and just last.year completed the 222 km La Ultra in Ladakh , again becoming the only Indian to have managed to do so.
Manikandan Kumar
• Para climber Manikandan Kumar won the gold medal in the IF SC Para Climbing Cup, organised in the United Kingdom on October 2, 2016.
• He also claimed a Silver medal in the IF SC Para Climbing World Cup in Italy and a Bronze medal in the para climbing World Cup in ‘ Innsbruck, Austria.
• He became the first and the only Indian climber to have won three Gold medals, seven Silver medals and a Bronze medal.
• This has never been achieved by any other Indian climber so far and I’m really happy to reach such a milestone.
Chawi Kohli
• Patiala fencer Chawi Kohli won her second gold medal at the international level in the U-17 Epee category with a win over Thailand fencer in the International Thailand Open held at Bangkok on September 30, 2016.
• Earlier, she had won the gold medal in U-15 category in the Jordan International Open last year.
• She took up fencing six years ago and became the national U-14 champion in EPEE event in the nationals held at Cuttak in 2013 before claiming the U-14 and U-17 EPEE gold medals.
R. Ashwin
• Ravichandran Ashwin became the fastest Indian bowler to pick 200 Test wickets when he dismissed Kane Williamson on the 4th day of the Kanpur Test against New Zealand on September 26, 2016.
• R. Ashwin also surpassed Test greats Dennis Lillee and Waqar Younis, both of whom collected 200 wickets in 38 tests.
• He made his Test debut against West Indies and became the seventh Indian to take a five-wicket haul on test debut.
Ritu Rani
• Ritu Rani retired from international hockey after Rio 2016 Olympics on September 24, 2016. It was also under her captaincy that the national team had won a Bronze medal at the 2014 Asian Games and a Silver medal at the 2013 Asian Champions Trophy.
• She also lead the side at the World League Semifinals held in Antwerp and the team finished in the fifth place beating higher ranked Japan in classification match.
• The Indian woman’s national field hockey team thus qualified for the ‘2016 Summer Olympics for the first time since the 1980 Summer Olympics under her captaincy.
Anjum Chopra
• Anjum Chopra became the first woman cricketer from India to be awarded an honorary life membership of the Marylebone Cricket Club.
• She played 12 Tests, 127 ODIs and 18 T20s. A left-hander, She aggregated 548 runs in tests, 2856 runs in ODIs, which included a century against England at Northampton in 1999.
• She was honoured alongside Sehwag, was the first Indian woman to hit an international century. An Arjuna awardee in 2007, she led India to a rare Test series win against South Africa in 2002.
Abhinav Bindra
• Abhinav Bindra officially announced his retirement due to September 5, 2016 because he felt it was time to move on and let the younger generation take over.
• He finished 4th in the Rio Olympics and was India’s one and only individual gold medallist.’He secured the winner’s position in the 10 m rifle event in Beijing. A second Qlympic medal was missed by a whisker at the recently-concluded Rio Olympics 2016.
